Herod's Perplexity
vs. Christian Confidence
Confidence means that something can be relied on in face of all doubt and reservation and appearances to the contrary...
Fr. Alfred Delp S.J.
Confidence is the fruit of faith. It is the condition that has not yet attained the full blessing of love but it embodies the sense of security we experience when we have firm ground under our feet, a foundation we can rely on. It puts our doubts to rest and allows us a sense of peace, because we know we can depend on the integrity we have built up and on our capacity to measure up to life's demands and bear whatever burdens are in store. The decision I spoke of just now in relation to personal faith becomes something final, irrevocable and is the basis for the ensuing decision. Confidence means that something can be relied on in face of all doubt and reservation and appearances to the contrary....
The relationship between humanity and God, in spite of the distance between them and the humble reverence necessary on our part, is a relationship built on personal trust. God bases many of his promises on the trust we should place in him. Many miracles and graces depend on the trust with which they are prayed for and expected.

condemned to death by the Nazis in Berlin, Germany.
