THEY LEFT THEIR NETS AND FOLLOWED HIM
Like Andrew and the other
Apostles, Jesus calls us, personally, to proclaim the Good News to all and to
help heal a broken world.
In today's Gospel Jesus catches His first
"catchers of men", Peter and Andrew, as they are casting their nets
into the sea. Later, we hear about James and John. Andrew was the first,
according to John's Gospel, to see Jesus. And he brought his brother to meet
Him. Then Jesus turns around and makes his brother head of the Apostles. To
accept wholeheartedly to do good work! The reading from Paul's Letter to the
Romans sheds some light on the calling of these men who are to be the first
disciples. Paul tells us that there are two requirements for being on God's
team: to believe with the heart that God raised Jesus from the dead and to
proclaim with our mouths that Jesus Christ is Lord.
Our Challenge today: Is that Jesus Christ
speaks the same message to us today. The challenge for us, today, is that we
will only be able to "catch people" for the Kingdom of God
if we allow the light of Christ to shine through us. Our heavenly Father wants
others to see the light of Christ Jesus in us - by the way we live, speak and
witness the joy of a Gospel life!
In the Responsorial Psalm we acclaim,
"Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life" (Jn 6:63). His Law is perfect
and it refreshes us and brings us wisdom. Like Andrew and the other Apostles,
Jesus calls us, personally, to proclaim the Good News to all and to help heal a
broken world. It's a call to holiness and to have a good attitude in sharing
the riches of Christ to all people.
